Qiantang New Area in Hangzhou held a ceremony May 8 to sign several life science projects, which will operate at the Research Institute for Tumor and Basic Medicine of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

On the same day last year, CAS signed a strategic partnership with the government of Zhejiang province.

Under the deal, the Zhejiang government will partner with CAS to build the CAS Research Institute for Tumor and Basic Medicine to carry out cutting-edge research in life sciences.

The institute is the first national life science research institute established in Hangzhou.

In addition to new major projects in the field of medical treatment of tumors, a number of academic teams led by CAS academicians Fu Xiaobing, Yu Qifeng and Ma Dawei have also chosen to work in Qiantang New Area.

Since the CAS research institute started operations a year ago, it has made some great achievements in medical research.

During the COVID-19 outbreak, the rapid diagnosis infection technology developed by a team led by Tan Weihong, a CAS member, managed to shorten the diagnosis time from three hours to 80 minutes, a world-class standard. The technology has now been applied at nearly 100 institutes in China and in more than 10 countries.
