Number of Hangzhou seniors aged 60 and over surpass 1.79m

The number of seniors aged 60 and over in Hangzhou, capital of East China's Zhejiang province, in 2019 surpassed 1.79 million, according to statistics released by the Hangzhou health commission May 7.

Statistics showed that by the end of 2019, the number of Hangzhou seniors aged 60 and above reached 1,795,700, a year-on-year increase of 51,300 people, accounting for 22.55 percent of the city's population.

The number of seniors aged 80 and above totaled 285,800, accounting for 15.91 percent of the seniors aged 60 and above in the city.

The number of seniors aged 90 and above reached 40,000, accounting for 2.23 percent of the total population aged 60 and above.

The top three districts in the city with the highest ratio of aged population were Shangcheng, Xihu and Xiacheng, with their number of seniors aged 60 and above accounting for 32.23 percent, 30.12 percent and 27.13 percent of their populations.

According to statistics, Hangzhou had 618 centenarians in 2019, and Xiaoshan had 13 centenarians, ranking first among the city's districts.

Over the past five years, Hangzhou has registered an annual increase of around 70,000 to 80,000 seniors aged 60 and above. Last year, the city saw a year-on-year increase of 51,300, a slight decrease than its previous year.

Hangzhou has seen an increasing number of aged people over the past 16 years. The number of seniors aged 80 and above increased from 109,600 in 2003 to 285,800 in 2019.

The number of centenarians in Hangzhou increased from 103 in 2003 to 618 in 2019.
