Twelve new sports venues are being built. Forty-three older venues and five athletes' villages are being renovated. These projects are utilizing new and innovative technologies, clean energy, new materials, and the internet of things. In addition, the number of 5G base stations in the city will exceed 30,000 by 2022.

Also growing with the economy is Hangzhou's population. According to the seventh census by the National Bureau of Statistics in 2020, Hangzhou is home to 11.94 million people, overtaking Wenzhou as the most populated city in Zhejiang.
