A hundred public toilets in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province will be renovated before June as part of the city's efforts to host the Asian Games Hangzhou 2022, local media reported on Feb 17.

The bureau announced that there will be at least two bilingual sign boards for each public toilet. The distance between a toilet and its sign boards will be kept between 50 to 200 meters.

The toilets will provide free toilet paper, sanitizer, hot water and facilities including mobile phone chargers.

In addition to the renovation campaign, the bureau will also keep an eye on the tourist traffic near Asian Games venues and add temporary public toilets.

Xiacheng district in Hangzhou plans to renovate and upgrade 20 public toilets through the use of digital technology. The district has developed a smart management platform which collects and analyzes real-time data generated at public toilets in the city.

The smart platform provides managers with real-time information about the cleanliness of a particular public toilet as well as real-time information about users of the toilet.

It only takes 30 seconds for sensors installed at the public toilets to detect if someone is smoking. A warning will then be given automatically, reminding them not to smoke in order to maintain a clean environment.

In addition, six toilets in Xiacheng have been equipped with automated external defibrillators (AED) in case of emergency.
