Hangzhou tourism surges to record high during May Day holiday

During this year's May Day holiday, tourist traffic in Hangzhou reached a historic peak.

According to data released by the Hangzhou bureau of culture, radio, television, and tourism, from May 1 to 5, the city's various scenic spots and rural tourism areas collectively welcomed 10.51 million visitors. Among them, 7.09 million were tourists from outside Hangzhou, marking an 11.6-percent year-on-year increase. Total tourism consumption in the city amounted to 10.71 billion yuan ($10.48 billion), reflecting a 22-percent year-on-year increase.

During the holiday, tourists flocked from Hangzhou's core scenic spots, such as West Lake, Hubin Pedestrian Street, Leifeng Pagoda, and Lingyin Temple, to attractions like Qiandao Lake, Fuyang Safari Park, and Daming Mountain. The bustling tourism spectacle extended from tourist attractions to commercial districts, rural areas, ancient towns, and cultural performance venues.

Data revealed that on May 2 and 3, Hangzhou's scenic spots and key cultural venues experienced peak visitor flows, with daily receptions exceeding 2.5 million people.

Music festivals and concerts also emerged as top draws during the holiday. The Zhang Jie concert at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center Stadium from May 2 to 4 attracted 155,000 people from across the country, while the Storm Electronic Music Festival from May 1 to 2 saw an average of 15,000 participants per day. These music events are revitalizing the cultural tourism market, creating a new pattern of holiday tourism consumption.
