Tang Mei Timea, a sophomore at the China Academy of Art specializing in Chinese painting, is using culture to strengthen ties between Hangzhou and Budapest.

Born to a Hungarian mother and a Chinese father, Tang embodies the fusion of both cultures in her artwork, particularly in Chinese painting, which she describes as the most philosophical of all arts.

Her journey into the world of Chinese painting began in Hungary, where she immersed herself in both Chinese language and art classes. Drawn to the deep-rooted cultural traditions, she pursued further studies in China, enrolling at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, a city which has been twinned with her hometown of Budapest since 1999.

Tang's artistic pursuits are not only limited to the classroom; she explores Hangzhou's landscapes and cultural heritage, often finding inspiration from places like West Lake and Longjing tea plantations.

Beyond her artistic endeavors, Tang also observes the growing ties between China and Hungary, noting the increasing ease of travel and cultural exchange. She points to significant developments like direct flights between Budapest and Chinese cities and the Hungary-Serbia railway project, both emblematic of the deepening cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative.

Through her experiences, Tang discovers surprising parallels between Hungarian and Chinese cultures, from linguistic customs to musical traditions and even the art of porcelain making.

With a deep commitment to bridging cultural divides, Tang aims to continue her exploration of Chinese culture, sharing her journey with friends and fellow Hungarians back home.
