Amid a scorching heatwave pushing temperatures to 38 C, Hangzhou residents have found refuge in air raid shelters, which offer a naturally cool environment.

At the air raid shelter located at No 38 Sipalou in Shangcheng district, the cool air provides a much-needed refuge from the outside heat. Inside, the atmosphere is vibrant with the sound of Olympic broadcasts, applause, cheers, and children's laughter. Residents comfortably seated inside focus on large TV screens, watching Chinese athletes compete in the Paris Olympics.

"This is my first time here. It's so cool inside, and I didn't expect to be able to watch the Olympics too. The atmosphere is fantastic with everyone watching together!" said a woman surnamed Zhang, who came with her grandson.

Before opening the air raid shelters as cooling centers, the Hangzhou civil air defense office conducted extensive renovations. They upgraded the facilities, added new furniture, and installed amenities such as a baby-changing rooms and accessible restrooms. Volunteers provide various services, including free medical consultations, haircuts, and herbal tea, ensuring a comfortable experience for all.
